It is located on the north bank -left- of the R\u00edo de la Plata, 177 kilometers from Montevideo and off the coast of Buenos Aires, Argentina, from which it is only about 50 kilometers (in a straight line). It is located on the cape formed by the tips of San Pedro and Santa Rita.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">The historic district comprising 12 hectares of the western end of the city, was declared a World Heritage Site in 1995, illustrating the successful fusion of Portuguese, Spanish and post-colonial styles. The plan is of Portuguese origin and contrasts with the standard prescribed by Spanish law on the West Indies.
